Before her appointment at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Tora Brawley served as a clinical neuropsychologist at WakeMed Hospital Rehabilitation Unit, Raleigh, North Carolina; an assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine/ Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas; and co-director of the Baylor Post-Concussion Neurobehavioral Clinic, Baylor College of Medicine. She joined the Department of Neuropsychiatry And Behavioral Science in 1999.

Dr. Brawley received a bachelor of arts in pre-med/psychology from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas. She earned a master of arts in clinical psychology and a doctorate in clinical psychology from California School of Professional Psychology, Fresno, California. She completed a psychology internship at Baylor College of Medicine and a psychology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Brawley is licensed in clinical psychology, and has a special interest in neuropsychological assessment of both clinical and forensic patients.
