Dr. Richard Frierson completed all of his education and post-graduate training at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina. After receiving a bachelor of arts in music, he earned a doctor of medicine from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. A general psychiatry residency and forensic psychiatry fellowship were completed at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, in conjunction with William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute, Columbia, S.C.
A faculty member since 1993, Dr. Frierson is an associate professor of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science. Since 1999 he has also served as Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program. He is board certified in psychiatry and forensic psychiatry, and has special interests in forensic psychiatry, criminal responsibility evaluations, civil competencies, and competency to stand trial.
